Got his patent granted as a Lieutenant of the United States Army. Henry Metcalfe, born in New York on October 29, 1847, died August 17, 1927 and was buried at the United States Military Academy. Officer in the United States Army Ordnance Corps. Metcalfe graduated on June 15, 1868, from West Point Military Academy, and was commissioned in the Ordnance Corps. He was appointed executive ordnance assistant at Springfield Armory on November 11, 1870 and later became Executive Ordnance Assistant. There he developed several improvements for small firearms for which he obtained a series of patents. In 1875, he was inspector at the small arms manufacturing at Providence Tool Company for three months. From late 1878 to late 1881 he was also Inspector of contract small-arms ammunition. Captain Metcalfe, who was promoted to that rank in March 1879, retired on October 26, 1893 due to an eye injury. |
